PRAYER JOURNAL - GOD IS GATHERING HIS CHICKS TO SHELTER THEM FROM THE STORM

HEBREW 3733 ornis ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป hen ๐Ÿ“

Matthew 23:37 and Luke 13:34 each preserve Jesus’ lament over Jerusalem, in which He employs the hen metaphor to reveal His covenant love for Israel. Both passages read in part: “how often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings”. The repetition across two independent Gospel settings underscores the importance Jesus placed on this image and assures readers of its authenticity.

Covenant Protection: The hen’s wings echo Old Testament language of divine shelter (Psalm 17:8; Psalm 91:4). Jesus identifies Himself with Yahweh’s protective presence, affirming His deity and unbroken continuity with prior revelation.

Maternal Tenderness: While Scripture frequently employs paternal titles for God, this feminine metaphor highlights the fullness of His compassion (Isaiah 66:13).

Human Resistance: The chicks’ refusal mirrors Israel’s historical obstinacy, a sobering reminder that divine grace requires humble reception.

Judgment and Mercy in Tension: The impending desolation of Jerusalem (Matthew 23:38) stands beside the gracious invitation to find refuge, illustrating the consistent biblical pattern of warning and promise.

Jesus is the active Gatherer—an activity elsewhere ascribed to God alone (Isaiah 40:11). By taking this role, He asserts Messianic authority and divine identity. The metaphor thus contributes to the cumulative Christological portrait in the Gospels: the Good Shepherd (John 10), the Mother Hen (Matthew 23; Luke 13), and the Shelter under whose wings salvation is found.

Isaiah 1:18—While Hebrew has ืœְื›ื•ּ־ื ָ֛ื (“come now”), the LXX renders with ฮ”ฮตแฟฆฯ„ฮต ฮดแฝด, a close cousin to แผ„ฮณฮต. The sense is identical: God graciously summons Israel to reason together and be cleansed.

Throughout the prophets, แผ„ฮณฮต or its near equivalents introduce divine invitations to repentance (Jeremiah 3:22) and warnings of judgment (Isaiah 41:21). The same particle can therefore herald grace or impending wrath, depending on the hearer’s response.

God invites the guilty to reason with Him and receive cleansing. Every call of แผ„ฮณฮต in Scripture foreshadows Christ’s invitation, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened” (Matthew 11:28).

"If you openly declare Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.”
