WHO IS KING AICISH?
Achish appears prominently in the Bible, especially in narratives involving David’s escape from Saul. His actions provide insights into God’s sovereignty and unexpected sources of provision.
David sought safety from Saul by fleeing to the land of the Philistines. He approached Achish for asylum and received it.
Achish allowed David and his men to settle in Ziklag (1 Samuel 27:6). This city became a secure base where they lived for over a year. During this time, Saul ceased pursuing David because he believed him aligned with the Philistines.

THE STORY OF DAVID AND KING ACHISH
The relationship between Achish (the Philistine king of Gath) and David was a complex mix of asylum, political deception, and mutual trust recorded primarily in 1 Samuel 21 and 27–29.
1. First Encounter (Faking Madness)
The Flight: Fleeing from the jealous King Saul, David first sought refuge in Gath.
The Danger: Achish’s servants recognized David as the famous Israelite warrior celebrated in songs for killing thousands of Philistines.
The Ruse: To save his life, David feigned insanity, scratching at the city gates and letting saliva run down his beard (1 Samuel 21:10–15).

Seeking Asylum Again: Later, tired of running from Saul, David returned to Achish with 600 fighting men, their families, and his two wives (Ahinoam and Abigail) (1 Samuel 27:2–3).
The Gift of Ziklag: Achish welcomed David as a valuable asset and granted him the frontier town of Ziklag to live in for a year and four months (1 Samuel 27:5–7).
The Deception: While living there, David raided nomadic southern neighbors (like the Amalekites and Geshurites), but told Achish he was attacking Israelite towns or their allies.
Total Trust: Convinced that David had permanently alienated his own people and made himself an enemy of Israel, Achish trusted David completely, even appointing him as his personal bodyguard (1 Samuel 27:12; 28:2).

The Call to War: When the Philistines gathered their armies to fight Israel, Achish ordered David and his men to march into battle as part of his forces (1 Samuel 28:1–2, 29:2).
The Philistine Lords' Veto: The other Philistine commanders refused to trust David, fearing he would turn on them mid-battle to regain favor with Saul (1 Samuel 29:3–5).
Reluctant Dismissal: Achish personally defended David's character—saying David was as faithful to him "as an angel of God"—but yielded to the pressure of his generals and regretfully sent David back to Ziklag (1 Samuel 29:6–11). This spared David the moral and political nightmare of fighting his own nation.
DAVID LOSES ALL AT ZIKLAG THEN RECOVERS ALL AFTER SEEKING THE LORD
King Achish dismissed David from going into battle at Aphek, sending him and his 600 men back to Ziklag. When they arrived, they found that the Amalekites had raided the town, burned it with fire, and captured all their wives and children.
Key Events
Dismissal by Achish: The Philistine commanders distrusted David, so King Achish ordered him to return home to Ziklag.
Distress at Ziklag: David and his men found their homes destroyed and their families taken captive, causing his men to weep and even talk of stoning David.
Seeking God: David encouraged himself in the Lord, asked the priest Abiathar to bring the ephod, and inquired of God whether he should pursue the raiders. God promised that he would overtake them and recover everything.
The Pursuit: David took 600 men, though 200 became too exhausted to cross the Besor Brook and stayed behind. With the help of an abandoned Egyptian slave, David's remaining 400 men found the Amalekite camp while they were feasting.
The Recovery: David attacked and recovered all—including his two wives (Ahinoam and Abigail), all the sons and daughters, and all the plunder, with nothing missing.
New Statute: David established a rule that the men who guarded the supplies at the camp shared equally in the plunder alongside the men who fought in battle.
