HEBREWS 10:37 NASB1995 “FOR YET IN A VERY LITTLE WHILE, HE WHO IS COMING WILL COME, AND WILL NOT DELAY.”

Designates the fathomless “depth” or “bottom” of the sea. In Scripture it brings to view the place where solid footing is lost, orientation is gone, and survival depends entirely on the Lord’s preserving grace.

Appears frequently in the Septuagint for the Hebrew tĕhōm (“deep”) and meṣūlāh (“depths”), especially in passages celebrating God’s victory over watery chaos. Exodus 15:5, for instance, sings, “The depths have covered them; they sank to the bottom like a stone.” Greek authors likewise used the term for the sea floor, the unseen realm where storms hurl ships and where treasures—or corpses—settle beyond human reach.

Divine Sovereignty over Chaos: Throughout Scripture the sea symbolizes untamed power. By parting the Red Sea (Exodus 14) and stilling Galilee’s waves (Mark 4:39), the Lord shows He rules the βυθός. Paul’s survival in the deep testifies that this sovereignty continues in the church age.

Suffering and Apostolic Authentication: Far from weakening Paul’s message, his night and day in the deep authenticates it. Just as Jesus validated His mission through the cross, Paul validates his through endurance. The peril of βυθός becomes a credential, exposing the hollowness of the “super-apostles” who boasted without scars (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).

Deliverance and Hope: Jonah descended to “the roots of the mountains” yet was brought up (Jonah 2:6). Paul likewise emerges alive, embodying the promise: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you” (Isaiah 43:2). The motif anticipates the final triumph when “the sea gave up its dead” (Revelation 20:13), proving that even the deepest abyss cannot imprison God’s people.

βυθός strips away self-reliance. Whether the “deep” is literal peril, emotional despair, or cultural hostility, the remedy is the same—call upon the One who “trampled the waves of the sea” (Job 9:8).

Gathers every form of moral deviation that violates the just character of God. It is not merely the absence of righteousness but an active distortion of what is right, a hostility toward truth that provokes divine wrath (Romans 1:18).

2 Thessalonians twice warns that those who “did not welcome the love of the truth…took pleasure in unrighteousness” will face judgment (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12), foreshadowing eschatological deception.

John succinctly defines sin itself as ἀδικία: “All wrongdoing is sin” (1 John 5:17). Yet hope triumphs: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Christ’s atoning faithfulness removes the very stain the word describes.

Peter exposes false teachers who “will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done…reveling in their deceptions” (2 Peter 2:13). They “loved the wages of unrighteousness” like Balaam (2 Peter 2:15). The church must therefore discern doctrine by its fruit.

Unrighteousness is both root and fruit of sin.

God’s righteousness is vindicated by judging ἀδικία and by justifying those who trust Christ.

The believer’s union with Christ empowers a definitive break from ἀδικία, though vigilance remains essential.

Final judgment will expose and punish all unrighteousness, while the new creation will be inhabited only by righteousness.

“Turn from unrighteousness and live,” confident that the One in whom “there is no unrighteousness” grants both forgiveness and a new way of life.

Jeremiah 42 teaches that we must truly surrender our plans to God instead of only asking Him to bless what we have already decided to do. 

WHAT HAPPENED?

• Jerusalem falls: Babylon destroys the city.
• Leaders are killed: The new governor, Gedaliah, is murdered.
• Fear grows: The remaining people in Judah are afraid of Babylon.
• A secret plan: The people plan to flee to safety in Egypt. 
• Asking for help: The people ask the prophet Jeremiah to pray to God for them.
• A solemn vow: They promise to obey God's answer, whether they like it or not.
• Ten days pass: God takes ten days to give Jeremiah His answer. 
• Stay in Judah: God says to stay in the land.
• Receive protection: God promises to plant them, protect them, and keep them safe from Babylon.
• Warning against Egypt: God forbids them from going to Egypt. He warns that fleeing there will bring the exact destruction—sword, hunger, and disease—they are trying to escape. 

LESSONS:

• Insincere obedience: The people sound humble, but their hearts are already set on Egypt.
• Self-deception: People often trick themselves into thinking they want God's will when they only want God's stamp of approval.
• True surrender: Real faith means accepting God's guidance even when it goes against our personal desires.
