Bribery is thus more than a civic crime; it is rebellion against the just order God established.
“A bribe is a charm to its giver; wherever he turns, he succeeds” (Proverbs 17:8) diagnoses its seductive appeal. Yet the same chapter condemns the practice outright: “A wicked man takes a bribe in secret to pervert the course of justice” (Proverbs 17:23).
Bribery as a hallmark of societal collapse. Isaiah laments, “Your rulers are rebels, friends of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts” (Isaiah 1:23). He warns against those “who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent” (Isaiah 5:23) and commends the one “who refuses a bribe to stop his ears from hearing of bloodshed” (Isaiah 33:15). Ezekiel holds Jerusalem to account: “In you they take bribes to shed blood” (Ezekiel 22:12). Micah exposes the trifecta of corruption—“Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets practice divination for money” (Micah 3:11)—underscoring that bribery infects every level of leadership.
Because God “accepts no bribe” (Deuteronomy 10:17), His people must mirror His integrity in their judicial and financial dealings.

The term therefore serves as both a barometer of the heart and a moral evaluation of what moves the lips. It exposes the national and personal shame that accompanies covenant unfaithfulness.
Psalm 126:2 records the purest form: “Then our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with shouts of joy.” This is covenant laughter—an overflow of gratitude when the LORD reverses captivity.
Lamentations 3:14 widens the scene to national tragedy. In each case, righteous sufferers are scorned not because of sin but because they cling to God. Their experience foreshadows the greater Mocked One whose faithfulness drew jeers on Golgotha.
Proverbs 10:23 pictures wickedness as “sport” to a fool, and Ecclesiastes relentlessly critiques hollow amusement. “I said of laughter, ‘It is folly’ ” (Ecclesiastes 2:2). “Sorrow is better than laughter” (Ecclesiastes 7:3). “Like the crackling of thorns under the pot, so is the laughter of the fool” (Ecclesiastes 7:6). When laughter divorces itself from truth, it becomes an anesthetic that deadens conscience and masks eternal realities.
Three times in Jeremiah 48 (verses 26, 27, 39) Moab is doomed to become “a laughingstock.” The ridicule of the nations serves as visible evidence of divine justice. Israel herself tasted similar shame. Derisive laughter, then, is a covenant sanction; it warns every nation that prides itself against the LORD.
The polarity—joyful release versus painful ridicule—points to a coming reversal for all who trust in God. Present sorrow may cast the righteous as objects of sport, yet future restoration will broaden their smiles into eternal praise. The motif anticipates Jesus’ promise: “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh” (Luke 6:21).
Mockery of the righteous is evidence of a world at odds with its Maker.
God intends redeemed laughter to bear witness to His faithfulness among the nations.
Empty amusement reveals the vanity of life lived “under the sun.”
Final joy belongs to the people God liberates; the last laugh is eschatological and holy.
שְׂחוֹק stands as a mirror to the heart and a measure of society. Joyful when anchored in salvation, hollow when divorced from truth, and terrifying when it signals divine derision, it reminds every reader that true laughter is ultimately a gift of the God who “will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with shouts of joy.”

שָׂחָה paints the picture of a body moving through or under liquid, whether by swimming, wading, or being submerged. In Hebrew thought, water is frequently a metaphor for overwhelming circumstances (Psalms 69:1-3; Jonah 2:3-6). The verb therefore carries connotations of exertion, struggle, and humbling dependence on forces greater than oneself.
Isaiah 25:11a – In the LORD’s judgment on Moab, “he will spread out his hands within it, as a swimmer spreads his hands to swim.”
Isaiah 25:11b – The same verse repeats the verb for emphasis, portraying futile thrashing against God’s decisive lowering of pride.
Moab’s proud resistance is pictured as frantic swimming in a cesspool of judgment. Hands that once labored for self-exaltation now flail uselessly.
Isaiah 25 forms part of an oracle (Isaiah 24–27) envisioning global judgment and eschatological salvation. Moab, occupying the high plateau east of the Dead Sea, epitomizes human arrogance. Their skill in irrigation and viticulture made “swimming” an apt satire: the very people confident in manipulating water are shown helpless within it.
Jesus Christ enters the waters of humiliation in His baptism and, ultimately, the flood of divine wrath on the cross (Luke 12:50). Yet He alone “walks on the sea” (Matthew 14:25), proving sovereign over the chaos that drowns humanity. All who trust in Him are lifted from overwhelming guilt into resurrection life (Romans 6:4).

The sower’s discriminating hand mirrors the LORD’s discriminating dealings with His people—chastening proportionately, preserving a remnant, never acting randomly (Deuteronomy 32:4; Jeremiah 24:5-7).
Isaiah 28 contrasts proud Ephraim with the humble farmer who respects God-given order. Just as the sower does not treat cumin like wheat, so the LORD will not treat obstinate rulers as faithful servants. Yet even the coming “threshing” aims at fruitful bread, not wanton destruction (Isaiah 28:28).
