KING SIHON WAS ONE OF THE TWO KINGS THAT GUARDED THE ENTRY POINT TO CANAAN. THE SLAYING OF THIS KING (AND THE OTHER, OG) PAVED THE WAY FOR GOD’S PEOPLE TO ENTER AND TAKE POSSESSION OF THE PROMISED LAND.

But King Sihon refused to let them cross his territory. Instead, he mobilized his entire army and attacked Israel in the wilderness, engaging them in battle at Jahaz. But the Israelites slaughtered them with their swords and occupied their land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River. They went only as far as the Ammonite border because the boundary of the Ammonites was fortified. So Israel captured all the towns of the Amorites and settled in them, including the city of Heshbon and its surrounding villages. Heshbon had been the capital of King Sihon of the Amorites. He had defeated a former Moabite king and seized all his land as far as the Arnon River. Therefore, the ancient poets wrote this about him: “Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt! Let the city of Sihon be restored. A fire flamed forth from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon. It burned the city of Ar in Moab; it destroyed the rulers of the Arnon heights. What sorrow awaits you, O people of Moab! You are finished, O worshipers of Chemosh! Chemosh has left his sons as refugees, his daughters as captives of Sihon, the Amorite king. We have utterly destroyed them, from Heshbon to Dibon. We have completely wiped them out as far away as Nophah and Medeba.” So the people of Israel occupied the territory of the Amorites.”

The prophets inveighed against high places as centers of syncretism, immorality, and injustice:
• Hosea: “Their altars will become like piles of stones on a plowed field” (Hosea 10:8).
• Amos: “The high places of Isaac will be destroyed” (Amos 7:9).

Worship at the high places involved burnt offerings, incense, libations, cultic meals, and ecstatic rites (Isaiah 65:7). The Musandam Governorate is a mountainous Omani exclave known as the "Norway of Arabia" for its dramatic, fjord-like inlets and rugged coastline, strategically located on the Strait of Hormuz. The region's strategic location gives Oman control over a key part of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route.
The Musandam occupies a peninsula which is the northeastern point of the Arabian Peninsula. It is like a finger of land jutting upwards from the northern border of the United Arab Emirates pointing towards Iran. Covering an area of about 1,800 square kilometers (or 700 square miles), the Musandam peninsula is surrounded by water on three sides; bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, and the Persian Gulf to the north and northwest.
Located at the entrance of the Persian Gulf, the territory sits on the southern edge of one of the world's most dynamic waterways, the strategic Strait of Hormuz. It is 100km from the Sultanate of Oman by road and 80km from the Republic of Iran by sea.
Foreigners are said to have named Musandam after the island called Musandam Island, which lies to the north of the mainland and covers an area of 5 square kms. In 1971, the Omani government named it the ‘Northern Region’, and then in 1979 the name was changed to the Musandam Governorate.
The exact meaning of the word Musandam itself is unknown although the 19th century traveler William Gifford Palgrave called the region “the blacksmith's anvil” because of the similarity of its shape which may have led to people later claiming that Musandam meant anvil in Arabic.

The name Hormuz (also historically spelled Ormus or Hormoz) derives from Ahura Mazda, the supreme and creator deity in ancient Zoroastrianism.
Through centuries of linguistic evolution, the ancient Persian Ahura Mazda morphed into the Middle Persian Ohrmazd, which later simplified into the modern geographic name Hormuz.
Alternative, less common theories for the name's origin include:
Persian Local Dialects: Some linguists connect it to Hur-Mogh, which translates to "Place of Dates" or "Date Palm Waterway".
